£92 PC goes on sale today

Remploy offering machine in a bid to get Brits online

A PC that costs less than £100 goes on sale today.

The computers, which are priced from £92, are refurbished machines that have been recycled and come with a flat screen monitor, mouse and keyboard along with an operating system and an Office package.

Purchasers will also be given a warranty, telephone support and delivery costs within the price.

Remploy, which helps disadvantaged and disabled people return to work, is behind the E-cycle scheme that was first announced earlier this year.

The project is part of Race Online 2012 - a number of proposals set out by UK Digital Champion and founder of lastminute.com Martha Lane Fox, in a bid to get the 9.2 million Brits that are currently offline net access before the end of the current parliament.

Meanwhile, a mobile broadband dongle that's available in one, three and 12 month options is being offered by 3 to ensure the PCs can access the web. Users can pay for their net access online, or off-line using Payzone, which allows cash payment at more than 20,000 sites including local convenience stores, garages and Post Offices.

"Being connected to the internet brings so many benefits and I am proud that we are making computers and internet connections more affordable for people who don't own their own PC," said Tim Matthews, Remploy's chief executive.

Martha Lane Fox said she was "excited about the possibilities this low-cost PC presents for the many people in the UK who so far have simply not been able to afford to get online".

"Remploy's mission is to expand opportunities for disabled and disadvantaged people. The £92 PC now means they are opening doors both online and in the workplace."

The PCs are on sale through Remploy's dedicated website.
