Christmas 2010 buyers' guide: all-in-one PCs

This year's best all-in-one PCs to give as presents

A family PC is a popular choice for a Christmas gift. A smart, space-saving all-in-one model can provide entertainment and web access in the living room.

MSI Wind Top AE2220 Hi-Fi

This music-focused all-in-one has a 21.6in (1920x1080) touchscreen. Powered by a 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 processor, the AE2220 has a pair of 5W speakers suspended within a magnesium-alloy membrane. An nVidia GeForce 9300 graphics processor, a 640GB hard drive, six USB ports, a six-in-one card reader, a 1.3Mp webcam and Wi-Fi are all included. A TV tuner, Blu-ray drive and an HDMI input combine to make this home PC exceptional value.

Sony Vaio J11

The Sony Vaio J11 is another example of an excellent all-in-one multimedia PC.

Primed with a 21.5in HD multitouch display, again at an HD-friendly 1980x1080 resolution, this feature-packed home-entertainment machine has its own MusicStation library and Vaio Media Plus home server. An intelligent photo gallery learns which images you like to view and serves up those shots more often than others. Sony has even given this space-saving marvel a ‘loop design' that offers you somewhere to store your keyboard when watching movies. Any type of optical disc you care to insert can be played, with support for DVD burning too.

Powered by an Intel Core i3 processor, you also get an nVidia GeForce 310M graphics processor, 4GB of memory, a 500GB hard drive and a Motion Eye webcam.

HP All-In-One 200

HP's All-In-One 200 is powered by an Intel Pentium E5400 and features 4GB of RAM. With a 21.5in LCD screen and an Intel GMA graphics chip, it's an ideal multimedia PC.

The 500GB hard drive offers plenty of space to store music, video and photos, and you can keep in touch via IM and the integrated webcam and microphone. A USB keyboard and mouse, DVD writer and Windows 7 Home Premium are included.

Lenovo IdeaCentre A700

If generous amounts of storage and a fast processor are what you want from your all-in-one PC, the IdeaCentre could be just the ticket. Powered by an Intel Core i7 processor, the A700 comes with a 23in (1920x1080) display that can be tilted to ensure the viewing angle suits.

Less than 1in thick, the glossy black Lenovo IdeaCentre A700 runs Windows 7 Home Premium and features 4GB of memory and a terabyte hard drive. Aimed squarely at those seeking a machine for multimedia use, the PC comes with embedded Dolby Home Theatre speakers and DirectX 11.0 graphics for enhanced video playback and gaming.

Samsung U200

The core specifications of the Samsung U200 aren't quite as impressive as the Lenovo's, but its lower price tag and unusual design make it a real contender for your choice of designer home PC. The stand pulls out at the back, rather like a photo frame – the Samsung can hang on a wall or stand on a surface. Powered by the Intel Core 2 Duo T4400 processor, the U200 sports a 20in (1600x900) touchscreen display and comes with 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive and a DVD writer. It runs Windows 7 Home Premium and has six USB ports, one of which will charge devices even when the PC is off.
