SMEs dazed and confused by IT

'techno-babble' from the IT industry and a lack of Government information to blame

Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are bewildered by technology and believe the IT industry and the government are to blame, according to a report from telecom, RSL Com.

The research revealed that 77 percent of UK SMEs did not believe the government was doing enough to explain the business advantages of the internet.

This was borne out by the report, which revealed that over 80 percent of UK businesses did not understand the benefits of broadband internet services; only 30 percent understood the benefits of ISDN and 92 percent did not understand the effect of unbundling the local loop.

The IT industry did not escape reproach though. Gary Sheppard, business development manager at RSL added that 66 percent of businesses believed the IT industry’s failure to communicate technology advantages without sinking into ‘techno-babble’, was also a serious problem.

“The government is always talking about its push to launch SMEs into e-business, but when it comes to the basics, like explaining to these businesses exactly how the internet and new technologies will help them, they are clearly falling short of the mark,” concluded Sheppard.
