Dell adds to Inspiron range

Raft of new products from PC maker includes notebooks and projector

Dell today lifted the lid on two notebooks it is adding to the existing Inspiron range. The Inspiron 1100 and Inspiron 5100 are designed as replacements for the 2600 and 2650 models, respectively.

Displayed to journalists last week in Barcelona, both notebooks use desktop processors rather than dedicated mobile processors. The 5100, a mid-range notebook, will use a Pentium 4 chip running up to 2.8GHz and will have one FireWire port and two USB 2.0 ports. It will also come with an optional 15in SXGA (super-extended graphics array) TFT display with a maximum resolution of 1,400x1,050.

The 1100, a budget model, will use a 2.0GHz Celeron processor and will come with either a 14.1in or 15in screen. Like the 5100, it also has two USB 2.0 ports and a stylish silver and blue casing.

Having announced earlier this month that all new desktop systems would cease to use floppy disk drives Dell will only supply floppy drives, with the new Inspiron models as an optional extra. From May, both will also be available with a DVD+RW drive.

Prices for the Inspiron 5100 begins at £800 excluding VAT. Pricing for the 1100 has not been finalised yet.

Dell has also introduced a portable projector to replace the 3100MP. The 3200MP is as lightweight as its predecessor at 1.6kg, but offers a brightness of 1,300 ansi lumens and an 1800:1 contrast ratio. UK pricing for this model has not yet been confirmed.

Dell is expected to launch several more products over the coming weeks.
