Industry shame awards

Big Brother puts the boot in for a fifth year

The fifth annual Big Brother awards, hosted by civil liberties group Privacy International, will take place at London's School of economics on 25 March, giving you the chance to name and shame those organisations that have done the most to destroy personal privacy.

There are five categories for nomination: most invasive company, most appalling project, most heinous government organisation, worst public servant and lifetime menace award. Previous 'winners' have included Jack Straw and the Home Office.

The 'winners' will receive the usual golden trophy in the shape of a boot stamping on a head — perhaps not something you'd want to display on the mantelpiece.

But it's not all bad news. The ceremony includes the presentation of the Winston award, given to individuals who have done their utmost to protect and champion privacy. Former titleholders include journalist Duncan Campbell and health guru Dr Fleur Fisher.

All nominations must be emailed to by Friday 13 March. A panel of lawyers, journalists and civil rights activists will select the winners.
