Sendo drops Microsoft for Nokia

Smartphone opts for Symbian over Windows for OS

UK mobile phone maker Sendo has ditched Microsoft in favour of Nokia as the maker of the technology behind its forthcoming Smartphone.

The Birmingham-based company will license Nokia's Series 60 platform, which runs over the Symbian operating system, for its Smartphone, Nokia and Sendo said in a joint statement.

Sendo
had planned to launch its Z100 Multimedia Smartphone (pictured), based on Microsoft's Windows Powered Smartphone 2002 software, within the next few weeks.

"We will not be shipping the Z100 Smartphone. It was not an easy decision and not a decision we took lightly," said Sendo spokeswoman Marijke van Hooren.

Due to legal reasons, the company could not detail why it had decided to cancel its agreement with Microsoft and terminate its Smartphone development program, van Hooren said.

"If we had had any other course of action available to us, we wouldn't have taken the decision to drop the Z100 Smartphone," she added.

As recently as 23 September, Sendo was still promoting the launch of the Smartphone.

"The whole licensing deal with Nokia went very, very quickly," van Hooren said when asked precisely when Sendo had made the decision to change its smart phone strategy.

Van Hooren declined to speculate when Sendo may be able to launch a smart phone using the Series 60 platform. "We have to see what we can reuse (from the plans for the Z100) and what we can redeploy. But let's face reality, it will not be in a couple of weeks," she said.

Representatives from Microsoft could not immediately be reached for comment.
