Evesham buys up Mertec

Welsh manufacturer gives PC maker foothold in new markets

Computer manufacturer Evesham today announced it has purchased Welsh system builder Mertec.

Mertec, a specialist in network server design and installation for large companies, has many contracts in the public sector, including local schools and colleges — a market which Evesham will now be able to tap into. But the PC maker wants to reassure its existing customers that this move doesn't signal a shift away from the consumer market

"Although people view us as a consumer vendor, around 45 percent of our income is [already] generated from business users," said Evesham's Carolyn Worth. "We hope this will allow us to strengthen our business offering and win new contracts in that sector."

But unlike other manufacturers, such as Elonex which unsuccessfully tried to break into the public sector and education market, and Dan which folded in the process, Evesham plans to use the contracts Mertec already has to make headway in this field.

"Having Mertec's skills and expertise mean we already have a good [footing] in this market," explains Worth.

Despite rumours to the contrary, Evesham said there will be no job losses as a result of the acquisition — at least for now.

"From our point of view, some positions have become redundant but we have enough room within the company to reposition those people. Whether they choose to take those positions or not is a different matter," said Worth. "Mertec will carry on trading as it has been and we will review the situation when we learn more about each other."
