Nokia launches first 3G handset

Dual-mode, tri-band 6650 will have Bluetooth too

Mobile phone manufacturer Nokia yesterday launched the UK's first dual-mode, tri-band, 3G-compliant handset, the 6650.

Nokia was keen to flout the benefits of the device's multitasking facilities, which allow it to run more than one data session at a time so that users can chat and record images simultaneously.

The handset features a built-in VGA camera, which can record 20 seconds of video with sound on the 7MB of internal memory. It can also be used for still photos which can be viewed on the display.

The phone also features MMS (multimedia messaging services), a 'wallet' application for online transactions and integrated Bluetooth.

Measuring 132x52x25mm and weighing 141g, Nokia says the phone offers two hours and 20 minutes of talk time in WCDMA (wideband code-division multiple access) mode and two hours 40 minutes in GSM (global system for mobiles) mode.

The 6650 will not hit the shelves until the beginning of next year. Pricing has not yet been announced.
