China blocks AltaVista search engine

Too much knowledge is a dangerous thing

The Chinese government has blocked Chinese internet users from using AltaVista search engine, less than a week after it blocked the Google search engine, according to a report on the BBC's news website.

The Chinese government keeps close control over the sites that China's 45m internet users can access and often blocks foreign news sites, but this is the first time it has blocked search engines, according to the report.

Yahoo.com is still available to Chinese users. Yahoo recently signed an agreement with the Chinese government on what information it would make available through its search engine.
