Home video menace must be stopped

Curb your camcorder habit or you could find yourself with no mates, according to a survey from multimedia firm Dazzle.

In the study, 60 percent of respondents said they hated being subjected to hours of home video footage. And we don't blame them: watching an amateur video is the modern day equivalent of having to sit through a holiday snap slideshow — yawn.

But merely having to view a few photos seems positively entertaining compared to some stories the survey revealed, such as the couple who were forced to watch their neighbour giving birth on tape, or another who had to endure an epic four-hour video of a family outing to Scarborough.

Dazzle does have an ulterior motive for bringing us these statistics, however, as its specialises in video-editing solutions and, given some of the other findings of the survey, some judicious editing might be just what some amateur film makers need.

On average, a home video lasts an hour, but despite all these memories captured on tape they are normally only watched twice — and that's by the people who made them as friends and family never watch tapes given to them.

To encourage Britain's camcorder fans to learn that brevity is the art of compelling footage, Dazzle has twinned up with PC World to launch a competition to find the UK's best amateur film producer. Entrants are asked to submit an edited, short clip — one to three minutes max. For more information on the competition, which closes 31 August click here.
