Weird and wonderful web buys

It's not just CDs and books that get bought online you know

Buying things online brings a world of shopping to your PC screen, and some consumers are really taking advantage of this according to a survey conducted by ISP UK Online.

The internet service provider asked its customers if they'd bought something over the web in the last six months and 71 percent of respondents said they had. So far so normal. But when asked what they had bought, the answers ranged from the weird to the wonderful.

One buyer had snapped up a bag of clouds, while another had picked up a star. On a less celestial note, other bizarre purchases included an elephant (yes, that's right, an elephant) and a goat hoof trimmer.

Another fact that the survey revealed was how useful internet stores are for collectors, who use the web to trawl for items ranging from a programme for My Fair Lady, stamps and Iron Age jewellery.

Respondents put paid to the idea that buyers don't trust large purchases to the net — you can hardly call an elephant small. But the most expensive products bought online were a Porsche car and a helicopter.

"There seemed to be no limit to the amount people were prepared to spend online for something they really wanted," said UK Online.

The top 10 most popular items were a bit more prosaic, including books, CDs and DVDs, flowers and holidays.

Now what was the URL we needed to buy our very own bag of clouds?
