NEC to deliver music to your mobile

NEC develops software for faster audio compression

NEC has come up with a way to transmit high quality audio files to a mobile phone. It claims the software can compress audio data six times faster than existing technologies and will enable users to compress five minutes of music on a PC in just 15 seconds.

The software, which NEC says will be available later this year, could be used for online music downloads, as well as mobile phones, allowing users to exchange data wirelessly.

Data compressed by the software is compatible with MPEG 4 for replay. "We have developed software that allows MPEG 4 to compress audio data faster for higher quality," NEC spokesman Seiji Sakai said.

Users will be able to alter compression rates depending on whether the priority is storage space or sound quality. The software can compress data by a maximum factor of 350 or a factor of 15 for audio of CD quality, Sakai said.
