Canon branches out with Ixy DV3

Next Ixus DV cam is Canon's big hope for diversification

In Japan, the Ixus is known as the Ixy and, to many, is synonomous with small digital still cameras.

But, with the Japanese launch this month of the Ixy DV3, Canon is hoping people will soon think about digital video cameras as well when they hear the name.

The new camera has a 680,000-pixel image pickup, which is great for video but easily outclassed by most dedicated still cameras.

Still, the camera will do nice snapshots at 1,024x768 pixel resolution and store them on a Secure Digital memory card. Videos are in MiniDV format and the camera features both DV and USB interfaces.

The basic battery provides up to 55 minutes of use with the 2in TFT (thin film transistor) LCD monitor switched on and 75 minutes when using the digital viewfinder.

Those familiar with Japanese can find further details of the new Ixus models here.
