ASA slaps Polar and SSC over ads

Box shifters get knuckles rapped

Polar Technology and Sight and Sound Computers (SSC) have been rapped by the
Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) for misleading advertising.

Both companies declined to attend a hearing with the ASA about the allegations
of false advertising. The companies were found guilty in absentia and the
industry watchdog will pass the cases on to the Committee of Advertising
Practice.

SSC received two slammings from the ASA. The first complaint was that its 12
month onsite warranty was not always honoured -- a claim that was agreed with by
the watchdog. The second allegation claimed that its promise of next day
delivery on most systems was also incorrect. The ASA has demanded that the
claims be removed from the company?s adverts.

The ASA also "admonished [SSC] for their lack of co-operation".

The complaint against Polar was due to the ASA believing that an advert for a
Polar PC inferred that it could play DVD films without additional hardware or
software. The advertisement was found to breach the advertising codes of
practice.

If both companies continue to ignore the warnings they may face an advertising
ban and legal proceedings from the Office of Fair Trading.
