NEC started sample shipping of 64Mb (megabit) mobile-specified RAM today, claiming it has the world's fastest reading speed. This should mean mobile devices that respond faster and boot up quicker.
NEC launches fast 64Mb of RAM for mobile devices
The new memory is designed for mobile phones and devices that can access wireless internet services. It features reading speeds of 65 nanoseconds per address and 18 nanoseconds per page, according to NEC.
As the volume of data on the wireless internet has grown, various high-volume DRAM (dynamic RAM) and SRAM (static RAM) products have been developed, NEC said. However, DRAM power consumption is high, and SRAM gets expensive at over 16Mb, the statement said.
Aiming to solve these problems, NEC unveiled the first generation of low-power consuming mobile specified RAM of 16Mb in 2000 and 32Mb in 2001. The 64Mb RAM is the latest in this family.
