AMD launches 1.3GHz Duron

Intel and the Greenie still neck and neck on budget

AMD has today started shipping a 1.3GHz version of its budget Duron processor.

The latest addition to AMD's Duron family offers a small speed increase over AMD's previously fastest 1.2GHz Duron chip.

With this latest slight further depression on the accelerator pedal of chipmaking AMD matches the clock speed of rival Intel's fastest budget processor, the Celeron.

How much longer Intel and AMD will go on fighting it out at this budget level is a constant question.

For now, however, there's got to be a limit until AMD moves Duron production over to its 0.13-micron processor core, currently codenamed Appaloosa and due to be rolled out before the summer.

Right now the Duron is still made using 0.18-micron technology, something Intel left behind, even in its budget Celeron range, some months ago.
