Gateway suspends 1GHz PC shipments

Thunderbird systems crash due to design flaw

Gateway has halted the shipment of its 1GHz Thunderbird Athlon systems until 10 July.

Gateway has admitted that its lab has discovered a glitch that causes the PC to lock up. It does not affect all of the Thunderbird PCs produced, but no more will be shipped until the problem is isolated. Gateway engineers are in the process of developing a fix.

Reports have suggested the problem may reside in an incompatibility between AMD’s latest processor and the motherboards used by Gateway.

The PC manufacturer claims no UK customers have been affected by the problem so far. The systems started shipping last month.
