Intel opts for fab four

What comes after Pentium III? Pentium 4

Intel knows not to fix a moniker that ain't broke - the chip maker has announced that its latest variety of desktop microprocessors will bear the Pentium 4 name.

This next generation range of processors will reach speeds of 1.5GHz. Currently codenamed Willamette, there had been speculation that the chip giant could opt for a different name. However the success of the Pentium series of processors has led Intel executives to continue backing the tag.

In a statement from Intel, it stated that PC users associated the brand with high performance, compatibility and high quality and that it was too recognisable to jettison.

The processors are scheduled for release in the second half of this year, according to Intel, and the Pentium 4 processor logo will become part of the “Intel Inside” advertising campaign.
