Toshiba claims battery breakthrough

Digital snappers to last five times longer

Toshiba is heralding a revolution in the use of mobile computer devices with the unveiling of a nickel-zinc based disposable battery.

The company claims the AA-size GigaEnergy battery will last five times as long as standard alkaline batteries.

Aimed primarily at digital camera users, the disposable battery is expected to hit UK shelves in March 2002.

No official pricing for the AA-size GigaEnergy battery has been set but, according to Toshiba officials, we can expect to pay an extra 50 percent more than you would for a standard AA-size alkaline battery.
