AMD Duron catches Celeron at 1.2GHz

Big Green catches Intel as Celeron makes last gasp

Days after catching up to rival Intel's fastest mobile processors, AMD has begun shipping a 1.2GHz version of its low-cost Duron processor that matches Intel's fastest Celeron.

The 1.2GHz Duron, which has 192KB of on-chip cache, matches the clock speed and price of Intel's fastest low-cost Celeron processor. Both the 1.2GHz Duron and 1.2GHz Celeron are priced the same.

PCs based on the 1.2GHz Duron are expected to be available before the end of the year, AMD said.

The introduction of the 1.2GHz Duron comes just days after AMD began shipping the latest versions of its mobile processors: the 1.2GHz mobile Athlon 4 and 950MHz mobile Duron processors.

The latest Mobile Athlon 4 and Mobile Duron chips match the clock speeds of Intel's fastest Mobile Pentium III and Mobile Celeron processors, which run at speeds up to 1.2GHz and 933MHz, respectively.
