Top-spec scanner for under a ton

Affordable, feature-packed flatbed from Visioneer

Visioneer today released its highest-spec OneTouch flatbed yet, the 8700 USB. Aggressively priced at under £100, the scanner maker clearly has its eye on the lucrative Christmas shopping season.

The feature-laden 8700 USB improves on its OneTouch siblings — the 8100 and 5600, already sitting pretty in PC Advisor's Top 10 Scanners chart — with high-resolution optical scanning at 1,200x4,800dpi (dots per inch).

As its name suggests, the 8700 allows simple, one-touch scanning and incorporates Visioneer's AutoScan technology for faster scan times, automatically cropping prescans.

With 48bit colour depth, the 8700 can recognises over 281 trillion different shades. Coupled with top resolution capabilities, that should mean fast, smooth results and colours true to the original.

Priced at £99.99, the 8700 USB will be available from the end of October and comes bundled with ScanSoft's storage package, Paper Deluxe, TextBridge Pro OCR (optical character recognition) software and the SE version of MGI's image-editor, PhotoSuite III.
