NTL offers cheap broadband

High-speed internet deal for the price of 56K access

Cable group NTL yesterday launched its high-speed unmetered internet package to UK customers, providing always-on connection at the same price as most standard dialup services.

The new package, available via a cable modem for £14.99 a month, will provide users with always-on access at 128Kbps (kilobits per second), over twice the speed of standard 56Kbps dialup services.

"The price is the same as other companies are offering for dialup services, it is well below current ISDN charges," said NTL.

The company added it hopes that for many customers this would be the first step towards its full 512Kbps broadband service.

NTL, which is struggling under the weight of its £10bn debts, is hoping the move will double its broadband customer base — currently standing at 52,000 — by the end of the year.
