Agfa cans scanners

German imaging firm bins low-end scanners

Agfa announced today it has ceased production of low-end scanners due to the current slump in the IT market.

After recently announcing it would be pulling out of the digital camera market, Agfa’s latest announcement may come as a surprise to some.

"It is a necessary step to weather-out the current market downturn," said the company. "We will still be making high-end scanners as demand is still there."

The company said that once all existing models had been sold no more units would be manufactured, for the time being at least.

Agfa has faced increased competition from PC packages that include free scanners over the past eight years, and it looks as though the German firm has finally admitted defeat.
