Sagem sticks with infrared

PDA with everything - except Bluetooth

French manufacturer Sagem's latest communications device is a fully featured PDA (personal digital assistant) that can also be used as a WAP-enabled mobile phone.

The WA 3050 combines standard PDA features with a digital memo recorder, MP3 player, WAP browser, email facilities and a mobile phone. Its 16MB memory will run Microsoft’s Pocket PC operating system and applications such as Pocket Excel, Pocket Outlook, Pocket Word.

The £543 device boasts dual-band phone capabilities with a separate on/off switch so the PDA itself can be off while the phone is still able to receive incoming calls via Vodafone or One2One networks.

As well as a hands-free kit and audio and video support for video-conferencing, the 198g WA 3050 comes with the usual PDA contact, task and calendar functions.

Serial, USB and infrared connections are provided so information can be synchronised with desktop or portable PCs and other PDAs. But despite the first flood of Bluetooth-enabled products currently being rolled out, the company has snubbed the highly-anticipated wireless communication standard.

Sagem’s spokesman said it had no plans to integrate Bluetooth support into its wireless information devices, though he conceded it may add support "externally" using software. Even so, he said, such support would not be added until "at least next year".

Sagem is not the only PDA maker to snub Bluetooth. Last week, Psion decided to ditch its Bluetooth PDAs, blaming slow consumer uptake and a conservative marketplace.
