1.8GHz Pentium 4 goes on sale

Intel hopes new chip will revive industry

Intel has released its new Pentium 4 1.8GHz processor today. The company also expects to release a 2GHz model in the third quarter of this year.

According to Intel, the Pentium 4 processors feature advanced processing power for such things as the optimisation of XML (extensible markup language) code, as well as the optimisation of technologies like peer-to-peer (where separate computers work together to solve a common problem) and voice recognition.

Speaking last week at the TechXNY trade show, Intel Executive Vice President and Director of Sales and Marketing Michael Splinter said that new products such as the Pentium 4, as well as the newly released 0.13 micron Tualatin processor would help turn the faltering IT economy around not just for Intel, but for the industry as a whole.

"We all know that recessions will end, and you don't save your way out of a recession. We build our way out of a recession with new products and capabilities," Splinter said.
