Adobe releases Acrobat Reader for Palm OS

Owners of Palm-based personal digital assistants can now get Adobe's Acrobat Reader on their devices.

With the full commercial release of the Acrobat Reader, users can view text and images in PDF format on palmtops that run the Palm OS, including devices made by Palm, Handspring and Sony. Acrobat Reader adapts PDF files for viewing on a small screen.

Acrobat Reader for Palm OS consists of a desktop application for preparing PDF files before synchronising them with the user's handheld device. It also has a reader which runs on the handheld device and is designed to work well on small-screen devices.

Adobe released a beta version of the PDF (Portable Document Format) file reader for the Palm operating system in April. Tuesday's full release offers something the Palm platform previously lacked - a rival to Microsoft's Reader software, installed on handheld devices using its Pocket PC platform. Electronic books and manuals are commonly distributed in the two rival formats.

The Acrobat Reader for Palm OS is available immediately and can be downloaded from here.
