Compaq works out three ranges is just too much

Compaq is to drop one of its lines of desktops and rebrand its iPaq PCs.

After scoring badly in the latest market share league figures, finally getting knocked off the top spot by long-time rival Dell, Compaq has realised people were getting lost choosing between three ranges of desktop PCs.

Evo is the new name for its business PCs. The range will include its Deskpro PCs and its iPaq thin client machines. After the iPaq PCs are rolled into the Evo range the iPaq series will contain only non-PC machines.

"Evo is a very big step towards simplifying the line up," said Jan Sweeting, senior product marketing manager at Compaq. "Overall one area where Compaq can improve is in helping customers identify what product range they should choose, which might have been more difficult in the past."

Compaq is staring at the prospect of being number two in a PC market whose days of skyrocket growth are over. It has much to do to pull itself back into the lead, and one of those things is to get away from having three PC product ranges.

This rationalisation means there is a far more simple home/consumer range, a business range and a non-PC range featuring devices such as the iPaq Pocket PC device.

Over the next 12 months Compaq will phase out all the current Deskpro and iPaq PCs. For now the firm is releasing two new desktops and two notebooks under the Evo brand. The Evo range is done out in 'striking' carbon and chrome, which Sweeting claims is a result of careful market research. To PC Advisor, though, it looks a bit 1977.
