Samsung to help launch 5G mobile broadband by 2020

Samsung claims 5G speeds will be hundreds of times faster than 4G

Samsung 5G

Samsung has announced developments in 5G which it claims will mean the technology could launch by 2020.

The Korean technology giant has made the world’s first adaptive array transceiver which is at the core of 5G (fifth generation) mobile broadband. The firm said the tech, which operates in millimeter-wave Ka bands, will provide data speeds hundreds of times faster than 4G LTE-Advanced networks which are due to launch by the end of the year.

The firm claims its 5G technology will provide users with a Gbps 'experience' and transmission speeds of up to several tens of Gbps per base station. It plans to accelerate research and development of 5G so that it can be commercialised by 2020.

"Samsung’s new adaptive array transceiver technology has proved itself as a successful solution. It transmits data in the millimeter-wave band at a frequency of 28 GHz at a speed of up to 1.056 Gbps to a distance of up to 2 kilometers." said Samsung.

"The adaptive array transceiver technology, using 64 antenna elements, can be a viable solution for overcoming the radio propagation loss at millimeter-wave bands, much higher than the conventional frequency bands ranging from several hundred MHz to several GHz."

The 5G technology will allow users to transmit vast amounts of data "practically without limitation", according to Samsung. It will mean real-time streaming of ultra-high-definition (UHD) content is possible.

As well as Samsung's work in the area, the European Commission plans to invest €50m during 2013 to bring 5G services to market by 2020.
