BT doubles its Infinity broadband speed

Boost benefits requires a new contract

BT has announced that it is increasing the speed of its Infinity fibre optic broadband to 76Mb.

Customers of BT's Infinty 2 broadband will get speeds of up to 76Mb, double the previous 38Mb speed. However, the catch is that existing subscribers will need to sign a new contract to get the boost.

The firm is still playing catch-up with Virgin Media which is upgrading customers to a theoretical maximum of 120Mb. BT is claiming to have the UK's fastest upload speeds with up to 19Mb.

John Petter, managing director of consumer at BT said: "Super-fast broadband is helping people enjoy the internet far more than ever before. However, many providers have forgotten about the importance of fast upload speeds. BT believes that fast upstream speeds are vital given how people now use the internet and so we are distancing ourselves from the competition by providing the UK’s fastest upload speed. "

BT is also boosting the upload speeds of its Infinity 1 package from 1.9Mb to 9.5MB. The firm said the changes will help achieve the government's ambition to have "the best super-fast broadband network in Europe by 2015."

The Infinity package is currently available to more than seven million premises in the UK. BT said this figure will rise to 10 million by the end of 2012 and then be available to two thirds of the country by 2014.
