Samsung Electronics is about to launch a digital music player with an FM radio receiver that supports the RDS (radio data system) data broadcasting system used on many radio stations in Europe.

The U3 is about the same size as a pack of chewing gum and has its own USB (Universal Serial Bus) connector, so doesn't need a cable to connect to a PC. It will be available in black, white, blue, pink and green, and in three capacities: 1GB, 2GB and 4GB.

Support for RDS means the player can capture and display information about the radio station on its 4-line OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screen. The device can also play MP3, Windows Media Audio, Ogg Vorbis and ASF audio files.

The players will be available globally later this month and the 1GB, 2GB and 4GB models will cost $79 (£40), $99 (£50) and $149 (£75) respectively. Samsung said the internal rechargeable battery will provide up to 15 hours' playing time.

The devices measure 25 millimetres by 80mm by 11mm and weigh 23 grams.
