DVD Jon (Jon Johansen) has explained his plans to open up Apple's FairPlay digital rights management (DRM) system.

Speaking to Fortune Magazine, he claimed to have reverse engineered FairPlay, the encryption technology that locks iTunes purchases to the iPod.

He intends to let companies use his software to sell rights-managed tracks that will play on an iPod, and also has technology to let other devices play iTunes-sold tracks.

His new venture is called DoubleTwist. Explaining his aims, he said: "Today's reality is that there's this iTunes-iPod ecosystem that excludes everyone else from the market."

Johansen explained that the thrust of his approach is to open up the market, and stressed his willingness to go to court to win the right to release the software code.
