Excitement over UK Apple launch today

Is Jobs in London for iTunes/Beatles tie-up?

EMI chief executive Eric Nicoli will hold an event in the UK with Apple boss Steve Jobs as a special guest, according to an invitation sent to press yesterday.

While the invitation doesn't specifically say what will be announced at the event, it does say that attendees will "hear about an exciting new digital offering”. The event, to be held at EMI’s London headquarters, will also feature a "special live performance" - further details were not available.

This event takes place after months of rumours claiming that music from The Beatles will be made available through iTunes, but Macworld UK sources have warned that today’s announcement is not related to that particular piece of speculation.

Others speculate that Apple could announce that EMI will remove DRM (digital rights management) restrictions on the tracks it sells via Apple's iTunes store. Earlier this year, Steve Jobs called DRM-free music "clearly the best alternative for consumers" and one Apple "would embrace in a heartbeat".

An audio webcast of the press conference will be made available at The EMI Group's website.
