EMusic nears 100 million downloads

iTunes competitor thrives on independent music

It may be only a fraction of the business that Apple's iTunes Store has achieved, but eMusic has reported that it’s nearing its 100 millionth MP3 download.

EMusic is a digital music retailer that claims to be the second-largest behind iTunes. The company specialises in independent music, and delivers content in MP3 format – therefore tracks bought from the site aren’t encumbered with DRM (Digital Rights Management) technology, unlike iTunes and Windows Media-based services.

EMusic was started in November 2003. The company offers about 1.8 million tracks, including music from more than 9,800 independent labels, to users in the UK, US and Europe.
