Nike+iPod owners reach a million miles

Tie-up hits the ground running

The Nike+iPod kit is delivering fast-paced success, with over one million miles of running logged by users in just ten weeks.

Announced last May by Nike and Apple, the Nike+iPod Sport Kit is a wireless system that allows Nike-enabled trainers to talk with your iPod nano. Data on time, distance, calories burned and pace is stored on your nano and can then be downloaded through iTunes to nikeplus.com, where runners can track their own progress and challenge others.

Nike points out that the million miles run by users so far is the equivalent of circling the world more than 40 times, and points out that 8,000 people logged their runs on Tuesday at its NikePlus website. The longest total distance logged by one person so far exceeded 600 miles, the company said.

"Nikeplus.com is fast becoming the world's biggest online running community," said Trevor Edwards, Nike's chief marketing officer. "Nike+ is a new running experience, a new way to train, a new way to connect with other runners, and a new way to bring music and sport together like never before. A million miles in ten weeks is just the beginning. We're looking forward to the billionth mile."

Nike+ is launching in more European markets this autumn, including France, Spain, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands, as well as Japan and Australia.
