Indonesia raid nets record bootleg DVD haul

Still just a drop in the ocean

In its third major raid in 10 days, the Jakarta Metropolitan Police seized 1.25 million pirated film and TV discs earlier this week, the MPA (Motion Picture Association) said today. It was a record haul for Indonesia that should raise the cost of bootlegging in the country, the MPA claimed.

The cache included 27 DVD-R burners capable of producing millions of bootleg DVDs each year. In all, the seizures represent approximately $960,000 (about £550,000) of lost sales for manufacturers and vendors.

The raid brought to 2.35 million the total number of pirated discs taken by Indonesian police in operations over the past few weeks, the MPA said in a statement. Representatives from the industry group supported the raids.

The group says the piracy rate in Indonesia is among the highest in the world, and cost MPA members $32m (£18.6m) in lost sales last year. MPA members include Sony Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox and Warner Bros.
