RIM unveils BBM Music for BlackBerry

Music service lets you listen to tracks on and offline

Research in Motion (RIM) has made BBM Music, the cloud-based music sharing service based around BlackBerry Messenger, publicly available.

The service, which was first launched in a closed beta trial in August this year, allows users to build a personal music profile of 50 songs that can be listened to on or offline on their BlackBerry handset. Furthermore, they can then share this profile with your friends by inviting them to subscribe to your list, which they can also listen to in full both on and offline. BlackBerry users can also join the BBM Music community and access the music profiles of all the other community members.

RIM said the service, which is being provided by Omnifone, offers a catalogue of millions of songs from leading record labels including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and EMI. Users will also be able to replace up to 25 tracks on their personal music profile each month and have also been given the ability to create playlists from tracks in their own music profiles, as well as utilising the songs from the friends' profiles.

"More than 45 million customers already love the social communication benefits delivered through BBM and we are thrilled to be extending the experience into a uniquely social and interactive music service," said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at Research In Motion.

"We have partnered with leading music companies to provide a 'full track' music sharing and discovery experience that will provide users with quality music on demand and allow them to connect with friends on a whole new level."

BBM Music costs £4.99 per month, although new users can trial the service for free for up to 60 days. For more information and to download the app, visit RIM's dedicated web page.
