Apple testing smart watch designs

iWatch could be wearable companion device for iPhone and iPad

Apple is reportedly testing various designs for a smart watch to go with its iPhone.

The iPhone maker is interested in launching a smart wristwatch which will wirelessly link to Apple's smartphone allowing some functions to be accessed. What could be called the iWatch might feature a curved screen made from flexible glass called Willow Glass, according to The New York Times.

The site sources 'people familiar with the company's explorations' and said the watch could feature mobile payments, navigation, messaging and as a fitness gadget with health information. The iWatch will run iOS just like the iPhone and iPad.

Pete Bocko, chief technology officer for Corning Glass Technologies, commenting on Willow Glass, said "You can certainly make it wrap around a cylindrical object and that could be someone’s wrist,"

"Right now, if I tried to make something that looked like a watch, that could be done using this flexible glass."

Foxconn, Apple's manufacturing contractor, has discussed technologies involved in a smart watch type device with the firm, according to The Wall Stree Journal. It’s already possible to use an iPod nano as a watch.

It is rumoured that the smart watch will have a 1.5in display and use Apple’s voice controlled assistant, Siri, to communicate with the iPhone. We don’t see any reason why it couldn’t also work with an iPad too, although capability would be more limited.

With many smart watches and other wearable technology on its way this year, it seems possible that Apple would join in the game. Google is already publically testing its smart glasses called Google Glass.
