iPhone 4S: 1 million iPhones sold in one day

Apple claims a record for iPhone sales

Apple said it sold more than 1 million iPhone 4S handsets in the first day the latest iPhone was available for order. Apple said that pre-orders for its upcoming smartphone had outstripped all previous iPhone launches, beating the previous record of 600,000 units ordered on the first day the iPhone 4 was on sale.

Apple's Phil Schiller said, "We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S. The first day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched. And we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do."

There has been a longer than usual wait between iPhones, and the iPhone 4S improves upon its predecessor with new features including Apple's dual-core A5 chip which Apple claims will offer 'blazing fast performance and stunning graphics'. There's also a new camera with advanced optics and full 1080p HD resolution video recording.

Perhaps the most interesting development the iPhone 4S offers is 'Siri', a voice-recognition function that Apple describes as 'an intelligent assistant'.

Apple’s new iPhone 4S doesn't look all that different on the surface to the iPhone 4 it joins. But the latest iPhone unveiled by Apple at a press event 4 October 2011 promises an improved processor, new wireless system, and more powerful camera, along with voice-control capabilities.

The iPhone 4S is available in black and white. The 16GB version is £499, while 32GB and 64GB editions’ prices have not yet been revealed.

They’ll be available for pre-order from this Friday, 7 October, with the phone on sale a week later on October 14 in the UK, US, Canada, Australia, France, German and Japan. The iPhone 4S will be available in more than 70 countries by the end of the year, Apple says.
