Steve Jobs special

Apple co-founder and chairman, tech visionary and one of the biggest names in the industry, Steve Jobs, is dead at 56.

The Ceatec electronics show was going on at the time of Jobs’ death, where many consumer electronics companies showed tablets and thin laptops, inspired by Apple products.

The scene outside of a San Francisco Apple store was similar to Ginza with flowers and people paying their respects. Later in the evening candles were lit and hundreds of notes were stuck to the glass of the store, passing along thoughts to Jobs.
While outside of Jobs home in Palo Alto California, mourners came to lay flowers and leave messages on the pavement. The flow of people was so heavy that police needed to close off part of the street.

Jobs won renown by making Apple synonymous with user-friendly design and pioneering consumer electronics. Under his leadership, the company revolutionised and virtually took over the market for music players and online music distribution with the iPod and iTunes. More recently, Apple disrupted the mobile computing business with its iconic iPad tablet. Throughout, Jobs was known for a hands-on management style and obsessive attention to the details of product design and marketing.

Jobs took a leave of absence from Apple in January 2011 and resigned as CEO in August, handing the reigns to Tim Cook. Steve Jobs leaves behind a wife, four children and a legacy of innovation.

That’s our show for this week, thanks for joining here on World Tech Update. Next time we’ll have news from the Ceatec electronics show so be sure to tune in. I’m Nick Barber and for all of us here at the IDG News Service, thanks for joining us and we hope to see you next time.
