App shows how to stop iPhone storing location data

Jailbreak-only utility stops handset recording your location

A new jailbreak-only utility can stop your Apple iPhone from recording and sharing location data, it has been claimed.

9to5Mac reports that 'untrackerd' is available for free from the Cydia jailbreak store and that it will block iOS's ability to log location-based data.

According to Cydia: "This package installs a daemon (process that can run in the background) to clean consolidated.db file) No new icons are added to your homescreen. There are no options to configure."

After it emerged earlier this week that the iPhone not only stores timestamped data about its location but shares it with a Mac or Windows PC every time it is synced, privacy campaigners have been eager to discover more about Apple's location-based data policies.

Privacy International has written an open letter to Steve Jobs, insisting that Apple answer questions about why the data is stored and how it is used.

"Apple has previously refused to take part in the emerging industry dialogue about privacy and has refused to engage in the debates that are shaping industry reform. Please help put our minds at rest as we are getting many questions from members of the public and from the media who are seeking our comments and advice," Privacy International's director, Simon Davies, writes in the letter.
