Mac App Store opens its doors

One-stop shop for Mac apps to spells end for Mac OS Download website?

The Mac App Store has officially opened.

"With more than 1,000 apps, the Mac App Store is off to a great start," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "We think users are going to love this innovative new way to discover and buy their favourite apps."

You can browse through the Mac App Store by category or use the search function. Like the iPhone App Store, you can read developer descriptions as well as user reviews.

Installing apps is a one-step process - simply enter your password and the app will appear on your dock within seconds. When it comes to updating, app updates can be installed one at a time or all at once.

There are several different categories, including Education, Games, Graphics & Design, Lifestyle, Productivity and Utilities.

However, many developers have voiced their apprehension about the Mac App Store, saying that it could limit consumer choice and lead to technical support "disasters".

Earlier this week, equinux said that it had concerns about the app approval process and hoped that "Apple doesn't repeat the mistakes they made with the launch of the App Store for the iPhone".

To get the Mac App Store, download the Mac OS X v10.6.6 Software Update.
