Apple launches new Mac Pro

Quad-core or 8-core versions available

Hot on heels of yesterday's rumours, Apple has announced two new Mac Pro desktop computers that run the Intel Nehalem Xeon processor.

Available as either a quad-core or 8-core system, both Mac Pro's feature nVidia GeForce GT 120 graphics, either 3GB or 6GB of memory and a 640GB Serial ATA hard drive running at 7200 rpm.

With a chassis made of highly recyclable aluminium, Apple says the Mac Pro conforms to the stringent Energy Star 5.0 requirements. Users will benefit from Bluetooth connectivity, an 18x DVD drive, five USB 2.0 ports and four FireWire 800 ports. The inclusion of a mini DisplayPort and DVI port also means the machine can be used with Apple's 24in and bigger displays.

Apple is offering the option to upgrade the graphics card to the ATI Radeon HD 4870. The machine's also offer four carriers that will support up to 4TB of internal storage.

The Mac Pro ships with Apple Keyboard with numerical keypad and Mighty Mouse and also comes bundled with Bundled with the Mac OS X Leopard operating system and Apple's iLife '09 apps suite.

The quad-core Mac Pro is priced at £1,899 and the 8-core version costs £2,499. Both will be available from Apple next week.

Apple has also updated its iMac and Mac mini lines. The new iMac's now feature Intel Core 2 Duo processors up to 3.06 GHz and up to 1TB of storage, while the Mac mini comes with nVidia GeForce 9400M integrated graphics.
