Mac OS X 10.5 'Leopard' nears release

Apple's next OS set for October 26 launch?

The online rumour mill suggests Apple's Mac OS X 10.5, 'Leopard', is set for release on 26 October.

AppleInsider reports Apple is gearing up for a batch of "significant announcements" scheduled to take place in the last week of the month, between 22-27 October.

The report says that as of mid-week last week, Apple had not yet declared Gold Master status on any of its pre-release builds of the OS. While that may be the case, the report suggests 26 October will be the launch point for the new OS.

This could be great news for UK Mac users, who may achieve an early look at the new OS at the MacLive Expo at National Hall, Olympia, which runs 25-27 October.

While Apple isn't on the list of exhibitors for this year's event, many of its leading UK reseller partners are. This means that if the OS actually ships on 26 October there's a chance some Macs at the show may have the system installed by the Saturday, offering show-goers the potential opportunity to see the new OS.

In a separate report, AppleInsider also confirms Sun Microsystems' new ZFS filesystem will see some support in Leopard, but will become a mainstage player in future iterations of the OS.
