Motorola has announced the second generation Moto 360 smart watch, commonly known as the Moto 360 2, at its joint press conference with Lenovo at IFA in Berlin. The original Moto 360 was hugely popular when it was first released, in part thanks to its circular display which appealed to fans of traditional wrist watches. The Moto 360 2 boasts a stainless steel body and a much slimmer design than its predecessor, which makes it look even sleeker and more elegant. See also: Best smart watches you can buy in 2015

Motorola hopes for more success with the 2105 Moto 360 2, as its going above and beyond what was offered with the original smartwatch, especially in terms of customisation. For one, there are two versions: one for men, and one aimed at women.

The Men's collection includes black, silver or gold colour options while the Women's collection comprises metallic bronze, silver or gold options. It’s not just colour that defines the differences between the two collections either, as there are also small design changes that make the smartwatches more masculine or feminine. We’ll get to the customisation in more detail below.

The company has also decided to take the route of many other smartwatch manufacturers (including Apple) by offering more than one size – well, for men anyway. Instead of being stuck with a 46mm size, you can now choose from the same 46mm design or a slightly smaller (but same size as Apple’s larger watch) 42mm design. However, women are only given a single choice, and that’s the 42mm design.

Motorola Moto 360 2: Release date and price UK

Unlike some tech launches, you don't need to wait months or even weeks because the Moto 360 2 goes on sale straight away. That means you can go buy it today, 2 September, despite rumours Motorola wouldn't announce the device for a few days yet. However, the official site simply allows you to pre-order with the black 42mm model stating an estimated shipping date of 28 September.

In the UK the Moto 360 2 will start at £229 when you build it on the Moto Maker. Price will then go up depending on which model you choose, what size you want and strap etc. See below for the customisation options and pricing.

Motorola will allow customers to customise their Moto 360 2 before purchasing it using its Moto Maker service. This is nothing new, as Moto Maker could be used to personalise the first generation Moto 360, however the choices were extremely limited. This year though, Motorola has pushed out the boat and lets you customise more than ever before.

You can choose from different sizes (42 and 46mm), as well as the colour of the case with the larger model costing £40 extra. The colours available for the Men's collection are Silver, Gold and Black - you'll need to pay £30 for the Gold case.

It's a fairly similar story from with the Women's collection, where you can choose from Bronze, Gold and Silver - with an extra cost of £30 for the latter two.

As well as this, you can also choose to customise the bezel (the metal rim that surrounds the case) in not only colour, but also design. Potential buyers can choose to have the same colour as the rest of the Moto 360 2, or can opt for a different combination – a black body with a gold rim, for example. If you don’t want a smooth bezel, this can be changed too, as Motorola also offers a Micro Cut service to create a ridged bezel which costs £20 extra.

Last, but not least, you can also choose from a range of straps. The range isn't as extensive as say, the Apple Watch, but offers straps made from either leather, double leather which wraps round twice (+£10) or metal (+£30), with colours to match the colour of the body. As with the body, extra charges apply if you opt for either the double leather or metal options, though these are nowhere near as expensive as Apple's selection.

Motorola Moto 360 2: Spec and features

So, what can we expect from the Moto 360 2 in terms of its spec and available features? The Moto 360 2 will be available in 42 and 46mm variations as mentioned, packing a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 with a 1.2GHz quad-core CPU, stepping away from the five-year-old TI OMAP3630 processor available in the first generation device and bringing it in line with other premium smartwatches like the LG Watch Urbane and the Huawei Watch.

Moto 360 2 specs

Alongside the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 CPU is an Adreno 305 with 450MHz, compared to the PowerVR SGX530 used in the Moto 360, which only clocks around 200MHz. It also comes with a fairly standard 512MB of RAM and 4GB of on-board storage, no different to the previous model.

It also comes with Moto Body, which allows the smartwatch to measure not only steps taken, but also specific workout activities, total calorie burn and even your heart rate. This opens the watch up to not only style-conscious techies, but also fitness fanatics. Alongside this, Motorola announced Live Dials, much like Complications on the Apple Watch, that provide you with snippets of information directly from the watch face such as the weather and your step count.

A small but important design change is that the physical button on the side has been moved up to 2 o'clock (as with the Huawei watch) making it easier to use.
