Google's Nexus 7 tablet, announced at Google I/O yesterday, has gone up for pre-order in the UK.

Eager Android fans can head to the Google Play Store now to pre-order a Nexus 7. The tablet debuts Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and starts at just £159 and will ship in 2-3 weeks, according to the store. See also: Google Nexus 7 tablet vs Apple iPad comparison review.

Google said: "Nexus 7 is a no compromise Android tablet that’s designed to go where you go. With a stunning 7in display, powerful quad-core processor and up to 8 hours of battery life during active use, Nexus 7 was built to bring you the best of Google in a slim, portable package that fits perfectly in your hand."

For a limited time, pre-orders for the Nexus 7 will come with £15 of credit to spend in the Play Store on apps and content as well as free media such as Transformers: Dark of the moon. It's powered by an nVidia Tegra 3 and has a 12-core GPU.

The sum of £159 will get you the 8GB model but there's also a 16GB model available for £199. The 7in ISP screen has a resolution of 800 x 1280, there's 1GB of RAM and a near-field communications (NFC) chip.

The Nexus 7, made by Asus, weighs 340g and measures in at 10.5mm. Remaining specs include a 1.2Mp front facing camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a micro USB port.
