VTech unveils InnoTab 3S and InnoTab 3 - new kids tablet features wi-fi

Wi-Fi and messaging new features for under £100

VTech InnoTab 3S kids tablet

VTech has announced its updated children’s tablet range with two new kids tablets, the InnoTab 3S and InnoTab 3, with immediate availability.

The VTech InnoTab 3S has a five-inch LCD screen, and features wi-fi and a “kid-safe” web browser plus a communication application called Kid Connect. It costs £99.99, and replaces the VTech InnoTab 2.

Rival kids tablet maker Leapfrog started selling its new LeapPad Ultra tablet in August. The Ultra, which also boasts wi-fi, costs £119.99. See: LeapPad Ultra review.

Kid safe web browsing

VTech claims that its web browser is kid safe, so parents can have peace of mind that their children aren’t accessing inappropriate content. See also - Group test: Best tablets for children and Best headphones for children

The web browser allows access to age-appropriate websites – such as Nick Jr, CBeebies and Time For Kids – vetted by VTech’s educational.

Parents also have the ability to add additional websites, giving them control over what sites their child can access.  The parental control feature is password protected to ensure children can’t add websites without their parents’ permission.

Kid Connect

Via the Kid Connect app children can send photos, pictures, and voice recordings to parents and friends through both tablet-to-smartphone and tablet-to-tablet. Kids can also send messages with over 100 emoticons and animated stickers from one InnoTab 3S to another, as well as to a smartphone or tablet that has the free Kid Connect app installed.

The Kid Connect network is controlled by parents with only parents sending and approving friend requests. From October a special Kid Connect Premium app will offers children the ability to send personalised voice messages, additional emoticons and animated stickers as well as photos and drawings from their InnoTab 3S.

The tablet also boasts an improved rotatable 2-megapixel camera, 17 included apps (including an e-reader, video recorder and music player) and a rechargeable battery pack and AC adaptor. It comes with 4GB of internal memory, expandable up to 32 GB with a micro SD card.

Children can download e-books, games, videos and music wirelessly from VTech’s online hub that boasts over 800 songs, apps, videos games and e-books. The library of downloads includes kids’ favourite UK characters such as Peppa Pig, and as well as music from One Direction.

Children use the Wish List maker to explore content on VTech’s Learning Lodge, pick their favourites, create a wish list and send the list to their parent’s email. Parents can then approve the wish list, which sends the purchases wirelessly to the InnoTab 3S.

There’s a cut-down, compact version, too, called the InnoTab 3, which costs £69.99. This model doesn’t feature the wi-fi features, and has a smaller 4.3-inch LCD touch screen, 2-megapixel rotatable camera, and 15 apps. It is compatible with the rechargeable battery pack.
