Asus Fonepad will hit UK on 26 April in 16GB model
The Fonepad phablet will arrive on the same day as Samsung's Galaxy S4 smartphone priced at £179 on a SIM-free basis. Asus said the Fonepad will be available to pre-order on 12 April at Carphone Warehouse, Amazon and Sainsburys. See also: Asus Fonepad hands-on review.
The price sits neatly between the 8GB and 16GB Wi-Fi only Nexus 7 tablet, made by Asus for Google. However, the Fonepad will only come in a 16GB model in the UK initially. We're waiting to hear prices for contracts but the SIM-free price is certainly cheaper than Samsung's Galaxy Note 8.0 which has gone on sale for £339 in a Wi-Fi only model.
The model of the Nexus 7 which has a SIM-card slot is only able to use data, not make phone calls or text messages like the Fonepad. See also: Asus Padfone 2 review.
Asus offers the same 7in IPS (1280 x 800) screen and the Nexus 7 with the Fonepad but other specifications differ. Namely the processor which is a 1.2GHz Intel Atom Z2420 dual-core chip backed by 1GB of RAM.
The Fonepad offers expandable storage thanks to a microSD card slot and comes with 5GB of Asus WebStorage for life. The device runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and although the model we saw at this year's Mobile World Congress (MWC) had a rear camera, the UK model does not.
We'll be bringing you a full review of the Asus Fonepad soon, but until then, make sure you check out our hands-on from MWC.
