HP plans x86 Windows 8 tablet, Slate 8

W8 tablet aimed at business

HP is planning a Windows 8 tablet thinner than Apple’s iPad, with a 10.1-inch screen and boasting 8-10 hours of battery life.

So says tech news and rumour site Neowin.

The site is excited about a rendering of the HP Windows 8 tablet currently going by the name HP Slate 8.

The x86 device is apparently targeted at the business user and won’t employ an ARM-based architecture.

Neowin admits that the slide shown is “a bit rough around the edges” but emphasises that its source is adamant that it is a working spec list and early mockup for the tablet.

HP was badly burned by the failure of its WebOS-based TouchPad tablet that it had marked out as an iPad killer but lasted a mere 49 days before being discontinued by the PC giant.

The company is expected to return to the WebOS platform next year, but looks like going with the safer Windows 8 as a tablet operating system at least for this year.
