Amazon brings Kindle Touch to the UK

The touchscreen eReader is finally headed for Blighty

Amazon has announced that its Kindle Touch eReader will launch in the UK on 27 April.

The device was unveiled last year but didn't launch in Europe straight away. The Kindle Touch is available to pre-order for £109 with a 3G version priced at £169.

The Kindle Touch is similar to the most recent Kindle apart from the obvious addition of a touch sensitive screen. This allows users to turn pages, navigate the shop and search like you would on a tablet such as the iPad.

Jorrit Van der Meulen, vice president of Kindle at Amazon said: "UK customers have been asking us to make Kindle Touch available on Amazon.co.uk and we are excited to do so today"

"We continue to see that people read more with Kindle—readers in the UK buy an average of 4 times the number of books they purchased prior to owning a Kindle. With the launch of Kindle Touch and Kindle Touch 3G we expect to see this reading renaissance continue."

Amazon Kindle Touch

The Kindle Touch uses the same 6-inch e-ink as previously but has a few tricks up its sleeve to make it stand out from its non-touch counterpart. Amazon has introduced an 'X-Ray' feature which displays passages from a book by searching ideas, fictional characters, historical figures, places or topics as well as more detailed descriptions from Wikipedia and Shelfari.

Access to the Kindle Store remains the same but the Kindle Touch and Kindle Touch 3G can hold up to 3,000 books compared with 1,400 of the regular Kindle.

EasyReach is another new feature which lets the user turn a page by tapping the screen. This means comfortable one handed use, according to Amazon. Remaining features include a two month battery life, adjustable fonts and text-to-speech.
