Acer Iconia Tab A100 tablet

Android Honeycomb tablet in a smaller chassis

Acer has started UK sales of its shrunk-down Iconia Android tablet. The Acer Iconia A100 is a 7in screen tablet that comes in 8GB and 16GB iterations and runs the Google Android 3.2 – the latest tweak to the Honeycomb operating system. Pricing starts at £249 including VAT. The 16GB Wi-Fi model costs £309.

The display has a resolution of 1024x600 pixels, while a 1GHz nVidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor and 512MB of DDR2 RAM power the 400g tablet. As well as 802.11 b, g and n Wi-Fi, the Acer Iconia A100 has Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity, plus physical connections in the form of USB 2.0 and HDMI. A microSD card slot allows the user to load up photos, music and more.

Acer Iconia A100 tabletThe 7in tablet is unusual in that it takes the ‘full fat’ version of Android 3.2, rather than – as with the HTC Flyer, for example – the version designed for the smaller screen and lower resolution of an Android smartphone. The menu bar along the bottom is around 20 percent smaller than on a full-size 10in Android Honeycomb tablet.

Unlike the first small form factor Android tablets that came out such as the original Samsung Galaxy Tab or the 5in Dell Streak, the Acer Iconia A100 is a tablet pure and simple. It's not also trying to be a smartphone. There's a 2Mp front camera that can be used as a webcam plus a 5Mp camera on the rear that also offers 720p video capture. Entertainment credentials are bolstered by  Dolby stereo output and Acer's clear.fi media manager. SocialJogger, Acer's integrated messaging and updates app, makes it easy to stay abreast of friends' activities.
